The origin was discovered by Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" ("The Extremes of Good and Evil)") written by Cicero in 45 BC. His book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, and it was very popular in the Renaissance period.

The first sentence of Lorem Ipsum - "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.." - comes from section 1.10.32 of Cicero's book. The Lorem Ipsum text has been used starting 1500 and it is used today almost in the same form as the original.
